Types of pilot certificates:
Pilot certificates are issued with ratings in any of 5 categories, which
are further subdivided into classes:
1. airplane (encompassing the four classes of single-engine land, multi-engine
land, single-engine sea, and multi-engine sea)
2. rotorcraft (in either the helicopter or gyroplane class)
3. powered-lift
4. glider
5. lighter than air (subdivided into airship, hot air balloon, and gas balloon
classes).
A student pilot certificate does not have ratings (and thus is not specific
to any category or class), but can be
endorsed by a flight instructor to
confer privileges in a specific make and model of aircraft.
